Embracing spirituality for business and personal growth
While many people find the term ‘spirituality’ to be too woo-woo or esoteric, spirituality is ultimately about getting to know yourself more intimately – both the light and the shadows. In fact, while the practices we choose as individuals vary greatly, for centuries, men and women have been embracing spirituality as a means of doing their own soul work… including for both business and personal growth.
Having a spiritual practice can be enlightening as it peels back the layers and reveals your true self. It can also empower and ground you in all areas of your life, and bring many unexpected benefits to your experience.
In this two-part blog series, we will take a closer look at spirituality and how it can support you in your personal life, as well as your business. This first article will explore the far-reaching benefits of spirituality, while the next blog will look at the various spiritual practices and how you can make them part of your daily routine.
What is spirituality?
Spirituality is an expansive term and often misunderstood concept. A spiritual practice is ultimately something that leads you to understand yourself, and indeed the world, better. It offers insight into human nature with all its beauty and flaws so that you can navigate the world and your rightful place in it. It is not spiritual by-passing, which is when we fall into a trap of denial, blame or avoidance in the name of spirituality.
It is typically a discipline of regular practice, so perhaps you meditate, keep a gratitude journal, practise breathwork, study human design or have some other rituals or ceremonies that matter to you. Different modalities will work for you at various stages of your life journey – there is no right or wrong. And it is important to tune into your own needs rather than following trends or influencers.
The results of a consistent spiritual practice aren’t always pleasant. In fact, it can often reveal a lot about you that you may not like, have been avoiding or are in denial about. But as Rumi observed, ‘The wound is the place where the Light enters you.’
It is important to learn how to love your whole self. That includes the ego, self-loathing, sadness, beauty and joy. It is not about fixing yourself but becoming your true, genuine self by peeling back the layers and loving yourself and the world around you more deeply, compassionately and genuinely.
The benefits of spirituality in your personal life
A spiritual practice is believed to benefit us in a number of different ways, emotionally, socially, physically and mentally.
Various studies have shown it to have a positive effect on mental health, with benefits to mental wellbeing, and acting as a protective factor for chronic and acute anxiety as well as depression, stress, suicide and substance abuse.
Spirituality is said to help build resilience and inner strength, develop confidence and self-esteem, and support the search for purpose and meaning in life. It can also promote strong connections and a sense of community.
But it’s not just mental and emotional benefits. Spirituality is also associated with positive physical benefits. This includes, for example, lowering blood pressure, decreasing heart rate, assisting longevity and influencing quality of life.
The benefits of spirituality in business
When we can understand ourselves better, we can understand the world better. This is one of the key benefits of spirituality in business. By doing the soul work, you may find yourself in a far better position for healthier communication and stronger connections.
Of course, this paves the way for greater success as a team member, as a leader, in networking and in business. All of these are crucial for a regional business to thrive.
Genuinely understanding who you are, your ‘why’, and your values can also help you to get crystal clear on the purpose of your business, your goals and who you are hoping to serve. You’ll be better able to keep things simple, particularly in the early years of business.
Understanding yourself will help you to attract the right team, target the right audience, and achieve alignment with clients and your career. This is a great step towards reducing the stress and anxiety that can be prevalent for small business owners.
Being able to manage stress in a more positive way and practise healthy communication will also create a better work environment for your team. Staff and clients can sense when a business, and its leader, are genuine and are more likely to want to engage and connect. The result is that you build customer retention and staff loyalty.
Further to this, certain spiritual practices will also provide insights as to what could be a barrier or strength – from astrological charts (for yourself and your business!) to human design and connecting with your soul’s purpose – there are a multitude of benefits to understanding yourself better that will help your business flourish!
You’ll also create a ripple effect, as the principle of helping the self helps the wider collective, as we are all connected.
